Gaff Rig Equations
Andrew Linn sent this to the mailing list
The gaff rig on my Weekender has a straight up and down mast. I don't think I have seen a gaff rig with a raked mast - but who knows? There is some 'magical formula' that is often stated for gaff rigs: Start with the luff - the length of the luff is then 1. The foot is 1.02 and is angled at 6 degrees The leech is 1.73 The head is .833 and is angled 30 degrees The height of the sail is 1.73 If you keep these proportions, the sail area SHOULD be 1.05 * (luff squared) and the Center of Effort SHOULD be .401 back from the luff, and the mast needs to be about 1.73 + the space you want under the boom. Pretend you wanted a 70sqft sail. Doing reverse math, you'd need a sail with a luff of just about 8' 2" (8.1666666ft) The rest comes from there.
